She was born on August 5, 1936 to Louis and Matilda Turntoes in Fort Belknap, Montana. Sylvia was the matriarch of our family. She grew up in the Little Rocky Mountains. Her first language was French Canadian. She attended the St. Paul's Mission school in Hays for elementary and onto Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota for some High School. She finished up High school at St. Paul's Mission School.
She completed her AAS Degree in 1995 when she was 59 years old at Fort Belknap College. She was a lifelong learner.
Sylvia was married twice in her life. She had four children with her first husband, Jack Kendall. In 1960, she met and married the love of her life Harold Heppner Sr. from this union she had six children. She had a total of 10 children, 20 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren. She was the essence of strength and grace.
Sylvia had many occupations to help provide for her family. When she was younger, she trained horses. She liked to rodeo and she was an excellent singer and tap dancer. Sylvia and Harold would go to Honky Tonks and perform. She was a known spitfire and could get anyone out of their seat and onto the dance floor. She would play softball in the summer and loved fishing, bowling, camping, and hunting.
She was fierce, she stood for what she believed in, she would love you and she would fight for you. She had a brain and she knew how to use it. She was beauty, hope and power. Her love had unimaginable depth. Her mornings started with a large pot of coffee, ready for anyone who wanted to visit.
Her advice, "You weren't meant to reach the grave in a perfectly preserved body Muriel Mattie, you should be skidding sideways saying WooHoo!"
