Shirley Legg Obituary

Shirley A. (Tyler) Legg, born September 29, 1930 passed away at the Hi-Line Retirement Center on December 8, 2020.

She was mother to four children:   Pamela of Juneau, Alaska, Robert of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Joelyn (deceased) of Malta, and Tracie of Helena, Montana.  Shirley and husband, Earl J. Legg were married in 1949.  Earl passed in 2003.  Shirley was also blessed with 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

Shirley was a life-long resident of Malta.  She graduated from Malta High School and worked full-time at the Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge during the 1950’s and 1960’s.  She worked at the local Bureau of Land Management office during the 1970’s.

Shirley was a very active volunteer within the Malta community.  She served as Malta’s first woman mayor 1982-1985.  She was one of the ten founding board members of the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum organized as a nonprofit in 2002.  She served for ten years.  Shirley represented all of Phillips County on the Missouri River Country tourism region Board for many years.  Shirley was also one of the founding Board members for the PhillCo Economic Growth Council, established in 1986.  She also served as voluntary secretary managing the finances and records for the organization.  And, she also acted as recording secretary for the Malta Chamber of Commerce during this time frame.

Shirley is regarded as an honorable friend and dedicated leader by many of her associates throughout her many years as a volunteer in the Malta community.

During their busy lives together, Earl and Shirley purchased a portion of the Tyler farm southwest of Malta.  They followed in her parent’s lead in selling potatoes on a commercial basis to businesses and families throughout Phillips County.  They also raised a variety of livestock.

They purchased several acres of raw land in east Malta, which they subdivided into individual residential parcels for sale to individual families living in Malta.

Shirley will be greatly missed by her extended family and friends, but we all cherish the many memories of the good times we all shared with her.

Services will be held privately for family in Malta, followed by interment at the Malta Cemetery.  The family will be scheduling a Celebration of Life in Summer 2021 when it is safer and more reasonable to celebrate in a group setting.
