Lynn Taskila Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lynn Taskila on December 25, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on February 9, 1946, to Edward and Lillian Taskila (Layton) in Great Falls, Montana, Lynn’s life was marked by talent, adventure, and passion.

Lynn graduated from Great Falls High School, where he was part of the legendary relay team that set a state record for the 440-yard race at Bison Stadium. His athletic prowess earned him a football scholarship to Dillon College, where he played as a running back for the Bulldogs.

In 1966, Lynn married Gail Whitcombe. Shortly after, he was drafted into the Vietnam War and served as a drill sergeant. During this time, Lynn welcomed his only child, Tanya, who was born at the Army base in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Following his military service, Lynn and his family moved to the West Coast, where he pursued his passion for aviation and earned his pilot’s license. Tanya fondly recalls her father’s thrilling aerial stunts in a bi-wing plane, soaring over their home and filling the skies with adventure. Lynn’s creativity also extended to music; self-taught on the piano, he could play nearly any song by ear and briefly taught Piano Theory at the University of Washington.

In the 1970s, Lynn’s love for sports led him to a career in golf. He served as an assistant golf professional at Bellevue Golf Course in Washington State before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, to chase his dream of qualifying for the PGA Tour. He later became an assistant pro at The Boulders Golf Course in Scottsdale, refining his skills and sharing his love for the game with others.

Later in life, Lynn returned to Great Falls, where he found love again with Margaret “Merle” Mikes who became his partner for over thirty years. Together, they enjoyed golf, dancing, and road trips treasure-hunting for their antiques business, Accents & Antiques. Lynn also played honky-tonk piano in a band showcasing his enduring passion for music.

Lynn was a man of many talents. He was an accomplished bowler who achieved a perfect game more than once and continued golfing throughout his life. His golfing accomplishments included winning the Anaconda Golf Championship 13 times, the Eagle Falls Club Championship 6 times, and the Montana State Three-Man Championship in 1998 alongside Mike Myers and Steve Hobbs. He won many local tournaments as well, was known for his wild trick shots, and shot three hole-in-ones.

Recognized for his sharp wit, generous spirit, and ability to teach, Lynn shared his love of golf with countless people. He was a devoted partner to Merle, especially during her health challenges and remained a loving father and grandfather.

Lynn was preceded in death by his beloved partner, Merle, in 2020. He is survived by his daughter, Tanya, and his grandson, Liam. He will be remembered for his sense of adventure, musical talent, athletic achievements, and the joy and humor he brought to those around him.

A private family memorial will take place in Monarch on March 10, with a celebration of Lynn’s life to follow at the Black Eagle Community Center on March 11.

Lynn’s memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all those who were lucky enough to know him.
