Lawrence “Hofie” Adams, “good boy,” began his journey to the Big Sands peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
Hofie was born April 3rd, 1978, in Fort Belknap, Montana, to Mel Lorraine (Adams) Doney and Lawrence Elliot Doney. At the age of one, his mother went to Cosmetology School in Bozeman, and he was left in the care of his maternal grandparents, Jiggs and Aggie (Brockie) Adams at the Adams Family Ranch on the county line where he grew up with his many Adams cousins. He cherished his memories of these days. He attended schools in Dodson, Hardin, Billings, and Harlem High School, where he enjoyed and excelled in wrestling and cross country. Hofie held various jobs –Head Start co-teacher being one of his favorites. He also enjoyed volunteering as a little league football and baseball coach, and a firefighter. He carried a strong work ethic and was an avid worker—someone who always did more than asked.
He had an interest in politics, world wide and tribal. He even contemplated running for Tribal Council, to follow in the steps of his Mother, many relatives, and friends.
On December 22, 1996, he ran clear across the reservation in 7 minutes to shake the hand of his father-in-law and ask to date his high school sweetheart, Morningflower Howard, who would become the love of his life for 29 years. Together, Hofie and Morningflower had three children and three grandchildren. He treasured time with his kids and grandbabies—being a father and grandfather meant everything to him.
He will be remembered as a kind person with the biggest heart, and always appreciative of everything. Someone who would give the shirt off his back to help someone else, and who always kept his door open. He had a calming spirit that drew good people to him and a one-of-a-kind sense of humor; he loved teasing and giving people a good scare just to make them laugh. He also had a great imagination and was quite the storyteller, earning an award at Dodson Kindergarten as “best story teller”.
Hofie was deeply loved and will be missed every day by his family. He is survived by his wife, Morningflower Howard; his children, Tylanna Adams (Cody), Tracel Adams, and Tayton Adams; his mother, Mel Lorraine Adams-Doney; his sister, Jeri Lynne Bell (Frank); Nikita Bell, his brothers; Steve Bell, Ron (Chrissy) Doney. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Dalton Wade, Rhiannon Love, and Ezra Daniel, who brought him a lot of pride and joy. Lastly, he will be remembered by numerous extended relatives and friends, as he was known and loved by so many.
He will be welcomed in heaven by his father, Elliot Doney, Paternal grandparents Bruce and Ida (Cuts The Rope) Doney, maternal grandparents John “Jiggs” and Agnes (Brockie) Adams, Brothers Rick Doney and AJ Bell.
