John “Johnnie” Maurice Arnold passed away peacefully on June 14th, 2026 at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital, Glasgow, MT surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
John Maurice Arnold was born December 6th, 1942 at Glasgow, MT to Maurice and Hattie Arnold. As the oldest of five children, he was raised on the family ranch north of Hinsdale, MT, where he developed a lifelong love of ranching and the cowboy life. As a toddler, he spent time on a horse and with his dog, Rover. He attended Snake Creek School through the eighth grade, and graduated class Salutatorian of Hinsdale High Class of 1960. Before graduation, he joined the National Guard, and had completed six months of service before his eighteenth birthday.
He married the love of his life, Linda Jensen in Hinsdale on October 5th, 1968. Together, they raised two sons, Mark and Michael. They lived at the Frenchman for the first two years of marriage before taking over the original family homestead that he grew up on when Maurice and Hattie moved to Hinsdale.
A true rancher at heart, Johnnie loved life on the ranch, breaking horses and helping neighbors. Working outside caring for the cattle made him the happiest, as well as spending time with family and friends. He was happiest outdoors, whether checking livestock, fixing fence, or spending long days in the saddle. Ranching was more than his livelihood - it was his passion, and he took great pride in the cattle he raised and the life he built.
He also treasured time spent with family and friends. He loved a good card game, and nearly every family gathering, eventually found everyone gathered around the table playing cards, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s company. His quiet strength, steady work ethic, and warm sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Art and Richard.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda; two sons, Mark (Deanna) of Malta/Hinsdale, MT and Michael of Williston, ND, as well as a sister JoAn (Bill) Hill of Hermiston, OR and youngest brother Eugene (Sherry) of Laurel, MT, grandchildren Ryan Paul, Justin Paul (Renae), Tyler Arnold, Erika Arnold, and Cody Arnold, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves many friends and family that are simply too many to list.
Johnnie leaves behind a legacy of hard work, honesty and love for family. Though his boots are now at rest, the values he lived by, and the memories he created will remain with those who loved him for generations to come.
Memorials may be sent to Hinsdale Ambulance Service, Hinsdale American Legion, Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department or Hinsdale Lutheran Church.
