Howard Berg Obituary

Howard Alton Berg, age 94, passed away peacefully at the Phillips County Hospital on September 7th 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on January 17, 1932, in Gary Minnesota on the family farm, Howard was raised in Whitewater, MT where he attended school and graduated as Valedictorian of his class. He attended Northern MT College in Havre for a short time with intentions of becoming a history teacher before he returned home to Whitewater where he worked for several local ranchers. He then went to work for the Malta Auto Company and was a devoted parts man for 44 years. It was during this time that he bought his first piece of farm ground, taking great pride in working the soil, raising crops and livestock and caring for the land he loved. Farming was more than a way of life for him, it was a reflection of his character: hard-working, dependable, patient and humble. He enjoyed working with his hands and was a skilled wood worker and mechanic. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends. He was a member of Kiwanis many years ago and a long-standing member of the Malta Club (Bucket).

He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, (big)brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He cherished all the times spent together sharing stories, laughter, wisdom, and an occasional beer. He knew the value of perseverance, kindness, honesty, and was never afraid of a hard day’s work.

Throughout his 94 years, Howard touched the lives of many.  He will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and sense of humor.

He is survived by his children, Joe Berg (Jamie), Ann Wilson (Jerry) and Lori Meeks (Scott), his grandchildren, Brittany, Brooklyn, Emma, Christian, Faith, Grace, Peyton and Sidney, his greatgrandchildren, Cora, Caroline, Hailey, and Riley, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Nordy and Gladys (Haukos) Berg, his wife Sue (Hoagland)Berg, and his siblings, Norma Fowler, Kenny, Nory, Francie, Pat Tribby, and Lois Boatman.

Rest peacefully, HB. Your work here is done, but your legacy will remain with us forever.
