Gloria was born at home on January 26, 1934 in DeLamere, North Dakota to Palmer and Borghild Foley. She attended rural school at Hall #1, grades 1-8. She attended DeLamere High School and graduated in 1951. She obtained her teaching certificate from Valley City State Teachers College in 1952. Her first teaching assignment was in a rural school near Wyndmere, N.D. She continued her love of educating her 1st and 2nd grade students for 11 years in Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, and Washington. At the same time finishing her B.S. degree in education in 1960. She enjoyed seeing much of the United States and even Cuba.

She met and married the love of her life Edmund Mortenson on August 1, 1965 and moved to the family farm north of Dodson where they raised their 3 children Twyla, Mark, and Paul.

For many years Gloria taught Sunday school, Bible school and was involved in WELCA at the Dodson Lutheran Church. She also put her beautiful voice to use in the church choir and put her heart into substitute teaching at the Dodson School.

She loved to read, recite poetry, bake, knit, embroider, and sew; in which whoever was blessed enough to try her baked goods would probably agree they were the absolute best. Gloria put her amazing sewing skills to use by quilting, and had gifted her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews with beautiful quilts.

Through the 54 years of marriage that Gloria and Edmund shared, they enjoyed going on Senior Citizen Bus Tours. They enjoyed this part of retirement, but were always overjoyed to come back home to see the family.
