Elgin Johnson Obituary

Elgin D. Johnson, 56, passed away on October 3rd, 2025, In Chinook, Montana of natural causes.  Elgin grew up on the Fort Belknap Reservation.  He was thru and thru a “Valley Child”.  He spent most of his childhood at the Old House.  He attended school in Harlem, MT and Wahpeton, ND.

Elgin was a jack of all trades but a master of none, like most of us, but he always needed to be doing something. He held various jobs thru his years, including a Wildland Fire Fighter, Fish & Game Officer, Police Officer, Lifeguard, Cashier, Laborer, to name a few but up until the end he was a Ranch Hand.   Elgin enjoyed helping others, which is why he worked with the Fort Belknap Volunteer Fire Department. Elgin was always on the go, he loved to hunt and fish along with many other outdoor hobbies.  If you knew him you would know that he was always up to something mischievous, as you could always tell from that devious grin of his.  One of the best activities that helped him clear his head was “Retail Therapy” at D-Mart, as he was always finding treasures.

In his later years, he slowed down just a bit, but in reality it was not much.  He liked to stay at his home in chinook and tinker with his different projects that he had going on.  But he would always make sure and make his rounds and visit family and friends.  Being a kid at heart himself he always had the patience to keep the kids entertained. One of the stops he made he always looked forward to was going to visit his granddaughter, Cheryce (Winter Storm Baby).  They had an incredibly special bond.  Elgin was always willing to help anyone out and always had a smile on his face.

He is survived by his Wife Roberta Messerly-Johnson, Daughters: Diandra Johnson, Savanah Spotted-Bird. Sons: Jeremy (Liz) Longee, Jesse (Dawn) Johnson, Sisters: Thea Kirkaldie, Roberta (Douglas) Johnson, Cindy Moccasin, and Maxine Rutherford.  Brothers: Edgar Johnson, Stanley (Joan) Johnson, Ival (Danielle) Jackson.  Grandchildren: Cheryce Marie Thomas, Iva, Jeremy Jr, Anthony, Dominique, Jesse Jr, Maya Lynn, Laila, Ben. Great-grandchildren: 1 baby boy and 2 baby girls.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Edgar and Belva Johnson, wives: Orla Longee and Sherry Bishop.  Sisters: Abby, Vikki, Vivian, Mary K, Marlene, Baby girl.  Brothers: Douglas Johnson, Benny Johnson, and Ronnie Moccasin.
