Cora Alice Nordby Maxie passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at the Phillips County Hospital. Cora was born April 9, 1926 to Norwegian immigrants Soren and Margit Lee Nordby and joined her sister Ella on the family farm south of Dodge, ND. Upon graduating from Dodge High School, Cora traveled to California to stay with relatives. She worked several jobs but was most proud of working in a factory sewing buckles on parachutes. After the war, she returned to Dodge and began dating and married fellow classmate James Maxie in1947. After 10 years of farming the Nordby farm, they sold the farm and Jim applied for and was accepted into training for the U.S. Border Patrol. In 1957, the family moved to Yuma, AZ where Jim was stationed. In 1961 they transferred to Malta, MT where they remained throughout their lives and raised their 5 children. Cora is survived by four of her children: Margaret Hanson (David) of Malta, Robert (Billie Rae Campbell) of Malta, Deborah Hammond (Mike) of Malta/Whitewater, and Vernice Hammond (Ted) of Alaska. Jim and Cora have 15 grandchildren: Deanna Henderson, Nikki Nessan, William Hanson, Darin Hanson, Kevin Hanson, Jason Price, Dietra Price, James Maxie, Eric Maxie. Nate Hammond, Hayley Jensen, Tricia LaBrie, Erin Jensen, Cole Hammond and Elle Palaro, 6 step grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 3 great great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim, sister Ella Nayes, daughter Bonnie Price (Ed) Idaho and grandsons Brent Waid and Ryan Maxie.
Cora worked at JC Penny. Kens Thriftway. Edwards and McLellan and the Malta Mercantile during her years in Malta.
Cora loved music, played piano, Quilted, crocheted and loved baking and cooking. She was well known for her jean quilts, fried chicken, doughnuts, scandinavian cookies and the Walleye potatoes. She loved family and any excuse for a celebration. She hosted Christmas Eve for many years and no one dreamed of going anywhere else. She cheered for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their sports and watched or listened to many a game. She did not believe in being idle.
There will be a family and friends gathering Sunday, July 14, 2024 night at 7:00 PM at Wilderness Funeral Home and a Memorial Service at Unity Lutheran Parish Monday, July 15, 2024 1:00 PM.
