Christian Douglas Blessing, 74, of Malta, passed away September 10, 2026, at his home. Chris was born on July 11, 1952, at a navy hospital in San Diego, California. His middle name was given in honor of General Douglas MacArthur. His formative years were spent in Chicago, Illinois with summers spent in Ohio with his grandparents. Chris attended several universities majoring in special education and counseling. He married Tonya Carter on July 17, 1982. He enjoyed a lucrative career as a police officer. He was a gentle giant with a dry sense of humor. He and his wife established a retreat facility for missionaries in Bennett, Colorado. They also did missions work in South Africa for twelve plus years. Chris was a spiritual father to thousands of African children. He was instrumental in providing over one million meals to hungry children in the rural regions of Limpopo Province, South Africa. The work that Chris began in South Africa continues.
Chris was an avid reader with strong political persuasions. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed listening to sixty’s music. He also found solace in singing traditional hymns. Crossbows, shotguns, and pick-up trucks were among his favorite things. He was a man of prayer who believed in humanitarian work but more importantly believed in the power of sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. He lived his life with integrity, courage, and compassion.
In recent years, he served with his wife at Malta Assembly of God. He worked behind the scenes assuring that the church family was cared for and loved especially the youth and children. Phillips County, with its unique landscape, wildlife, cattle, and expansive ranches felt like home to Chris. He was proud to live in Malta and often bragged on his church family and community.
Chris was proceeded in death by his lovely mother, Ellen Durst Blessing, his brother Byron “Jimmy” Blessing, and a precious baby boy. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Tonya and numerous family members who will miss his insights and humor.
A viewing will be held at Wilderness Funeral Home in Malta from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th. A celebration of life service will be held at Malta Assembly of God at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18th with a luncheon at the church to follow.
A second memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, October 17th in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Chris will be laid to rest in Northampton Township, Ohio.
A gathering will also be hosted by dear friends in Mokopane, Limpopo, South Africa.
Chris’ favorite Bible verse comes from the Book of Job. “What is man that he can do for God?” (Job 7:17)
Chris lived a life filled with purpose and adventure.
