Camilla Doney Obituary

Camie Chandler Doney, (Iron Woman) who was born to Elizabeth Chandler and William “Bud” Healy on April 20, 1940, in Hays, MT. She attended boarding school in Piere, SD at the tender age of 6. There she met and maintained a close relationship with Diana Strike for her entire life, speaking almost daily on the phone. She returned to Hays where she attended the St. Paul Mission Elementary School. She moved to Oakland, CA with her aunt and Uncle George and Margie Chandler Sr. in the early 50’s as part of the “Relocation Project.” Camie was 16 when she married the love of her life Richard “Coofra” Doney and were together for 37 years until his passing in 1993. She started a career in teaching for the Hays/LodgePole and St. Paul’s Mission Schools. Despite raising 5 children and having a full-time job teaching she completed her bachelor’s degree in education, from MSU and was a Regent on the Council of Elders. As a bi-lingual teacher for the Hays/LodgePole she was integral in the effort to preserve the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine Language. She, alongside her very special friend/sister Minerva Allen spent countless hours interviewing and recording elders in attempts to develop a curriculum for teaching younger generations and ensuring the Gros Ventre language will be spoken for years to come. Family was everything to Camie, and her love of not only her own children but her extended family and friends. This love earned her the nickname “mother hen.” When her best friend was ill Camie took in her friend’s son and raised him as her own until her friend was back on her feet. Camie showed this love more times in her life than can be counted. Camie’s hobbies included reading, playing cards, scrabble, and was known to tell company to “be quiet” if Wheel of Fortune was on the TV. Camie is survived by her brother Al “Baka” Chandler (Carol Falcon Chandler), sisters Kathleen Kane, Elousie Geiser, Elaine “Tiny” Valdez, Debbie Morsette, Barbara Healy, Audrey “Tammy” Clayborn, Teri Healy. Her children Ralph Doney, Russell Doney, Darian (Tom) Soennichsen, Timothy Plummer, and David Merkley (LaVonda), 11 grandchildren, Leann, Lachelle, Devan, Kelsey, Annette, Ree, Autumn, Gunner, Zoey, Dana, and Tatum, 5 great grandchildren Arthur, Charlotte, Maverick, Myla, and Devan. She was preceded by her parents Elizabeth Chandler and William Healy, brothers Wayne Healy, Percy Plummage, David Healy, and Marvin Healy, sisters Laura Fucito, Annette Fox, Aurelia Spencer, Coralee Turnsplenty, husband Richard Doney, sons Wade, R. Wilber Doney, and great grandson Teaunce “TJ” Brockie. And all her numerous nieces, nephews, collegues, students, and friends. She loved dearly.
