Betty Jean Buckman

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Betty Jean Buckman, who left this world surrounded by family on July 13, 2026, at the age of 69. Betty was born on July 30, 1956, in the close-knit community of Fort Belknap, Montana, to her loving parents, Ada Snell and Martin Buckman. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and a profound dedication to family and community.
Betty grew up surrounded by the warmth of her large family, alongside her siblings Ruth Longknife, Charlie Buckman, Mary Lou Longknife, Mike Buckman, and Ted Buckman.
Though predeceased by her parents, and siblings Renae, Carol, Claudette, Martina, Douglas, Martin Jr., Rudy, Leslie, Harry, and Robert, their spirits live on in the stories and memories she shared.
In 1976, Betty met the love of her life, James "Bass" Walls. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey of 49 years, creating a loving home and raising seven children: Adrian Buckman, Tanya (Johnny) O'Claray, Riley Walls, Denise Walls, Verena Iris Walls (Delvin Ereaux), Jaime Walls (Mike King), and James Walls. Their family grew to include numerous grandchildren, some of whom were fortunate enough to be raised by Betty and James as their own.
A proud graduate of Flandreau High School in 1974, Betty pursued further education at Fort Belknap College. Her career began as a head start teacher, where she nurtured young minds with patience and love. Later, as her children grew, she loved traveling around to watch her grandkids, kids of the community play basketball. Betty embraced new adventures, working as camp crew personnel during fire seasons and for a major catering service, where she traveled extensively, providing comfort during crises.
Betty's warm spirit was matched by her passion for music, from the classic tunes of '70s rock, R&B, and K-pop to the lively halls of bingo games and keno machines. She was known for her exquisite cooking and baking, her humor and wit, and above all, her boundless love and devotion to her family. Caring for children of the community and some calling her grandma. Her legacy as the best mother and grandmother is forever etched in the hearts of those who knew her.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held on July 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Fort Belknap Agency Community Center. Friends and family are invited to gather and honor her remarkable life and unwavering love.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Hospice Staff at Northern Montana Hospital and all friends and family who provided comfort in her final days. Betty Jean Buckman will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were touched by her kindness and love.
